Why Don't Young People Vote?
The article Why Don't Young People Vote was written by Hanan Esaili, a millennial belonging to Generation Y. She discusses the "lazy" stereotype millennials have gained and does not necessarily refute it as she begins to talk about the absence of her generation from the polls. Her main point in this article is to say that millennials truly do care about the issues the country faces today, however, "66 percent agree that when the government runs something, it is 'usually inefficient and wasteful.'" Although I do not identify with that 66%, I found that I did share similarities with participants in a poll for the Libertarian magazine, Reason. A political typology quiz proved what I already knew, which is that I am socially liberal and fiscally conservative, like the majority of the poll takers. I also share the view that abortion should be legal as well as same-sex marriage, and that the drinking age should be lowered. The most significant point made by Easili is that, "The democratic process does not work if we are not connected and doing something". Personally, I think that every eligible person should vote regardless of their age and social views. I do believe in the argument that we are the future, and for that reason, politicians and presidential candidates should target our opinions when building their campaign. But regardless of feeling heard or not heard, you should vote to try and gain a leader who will most closely support your wishes and ideas.
